일제강점기 미국 남장로회 교육선교: 미션스쿨의 식민교육제도에 대한 순응과 저항의 변증법

이 논문은 미국 남장로회가 일제강점기 한국사회에서 미션스쿨을 통한 기독교적 교육의 목적을 일관되게 추구하기 위해서 식민교육제도에 순응하고 저항한 과정을 교회사적으로 규명하는 연구이다. 조선교육령과 사립학교규칙과 지정학교제도는 일제가 독점적 교육제도 아래서 사립학교를 규제하고 통제하면서 그들이 바라는 식민지인으로 길들이기 위한 법적, 제도적 장치였다. 일제는 독점적 권력을 가지고 미션스쿨을 식민교육제도로 편입시켜 적극적으로 통제하며 자신들의 교육이념을 예외 없이 실현하려고 꾸준히 노력했다. 남장로회는 일제의 식민교육제도 아래서 수시로 변화되는 법과 제도에 순응하면서 기독교 정체성과 교육의 원칙을 지키는 노력을 포기하지 않았다. 때로는 타협과 순응으로, 때로는 비타협과 저항으로, 때로는 타협과 비타협 그리고 순응과 저항의 변증법적 대응방식으로, 주어진 교육환경과 여건 속에서 기독교 지도자 양성을 위한 교육목표가 실질적으로 이루어질 수 있도록 노력했다. 그러나 일제가 제국주의 확장전쟁을 위해 신사참배를 앞세워 천황과 국가를 우상화하는 교육제도 아래서는 교육선교가 불가능하다고 판단하고 무조건적인 폐교를 단행하였다. 폐교와 교육사업 철수는 일제 식민통치에 대한 전면적인 거부나 적극적인 저항과는 거리가 멀었지만 기독교 신앙과 양심에 따라 신사참배를 단호히 거절함으로써 천황제 국가주의의 우상성과 그것에 종노릇하는 식민교육제도의 허상을 폭로하며 정면으로 거부하는 근본적 저항이었다.
Abstract
This paper deals with educational work of the Southern Presbyterian mission in colonial Korea, investigating the way in which the mission school conformed to and resisted the Japanese colonial educational rules in order to pursue consistently their educational purpose. The Japanese Government-General of Korea acted Chosen Educational Ordinance, Private School Rule, Designated School system, and other regulations, by which they controlled and ruled private schools including mission schools in order to domesticate the colonized to the colonial policies. The Japanese with hegemonic power sought colonial ideology through education and incorporated mission schools to the colonial educational system. The Southern Presbyterian mission never lost their educational purpose and principles while accepting and conforming to changing rules and policies under the colonial education system. They pursued nurturing leaders for the Korean church at any changing situations accordingly sometimes by accepting, by opposing, or by dialectic pairs of conformity and resistance. Finally, they closed all the mission schools when the Japanese Government-General enforced the Shinto shrine worship, which was a non-negotiable demand to their mission school. It was not a denial or struggle to the Japanese colonial rule, but a radical resistance to idolatry of the sanctified emperor system.
