미국 남장로회 광주 선교지부 여성 독신 선교사 도마리아(Mary L. Dodson)와 유화례(Florence E. Root)의 선교 사역과 ‘동일화’ 평가

본 논문은 남장로회 한국 선교회 소속으로 호남 지역 교회 성장 및 여성 지위 향상에 소리 없는 주역으로 활동한 두 여성 선교사 도마리아(Mary L. Dodson, 1881-1972)와 유화례(Florence E. Root, 1893-1995)의 생애와 사역을전반적으로 살피는 작업이다. 최근 남장로회 여성 선교사, 특히 독신 여선교사들에 대한 소개가 대중적으로 많이 이루어졌다. 광주를 중심으로여성 전도와 교육으로 일생을 보낸 도마리아와 유화례의 사례도 조금씩소개되기 시작했다. 그러나 도마리아와 유화례를 학술적으로 다룬 글은거의 나오지 않았다. 본 논문은 선교사들의 회의록과 보고서, 회고록 등의 문헌을 중심으로 한국 기독교 역사와 남장로회 한국 선교 역사라는 큰틀 안에서 두 선교사의 생애와 사역을 시기별로 병렬 배치하면서 정리했다. 각각 38년간, 51년간 광주에서 한국인과 가장 유사한 방식으로 살면서, 두 선교사는 다른 남장로회 선교사들과는 다른 수준으로 한국인, 특히 한국의 시골 여성들과의 동일화를 이루어냈다. 만약 현지인과의 ‘동일화’ 또는 ‘동일시’(identification)라는 기준이 선교사들의 진정성을 평가하는기준 중 하나라면, 남장로교 한국선교회 내에서는 하나의 집단으로서의여성 독신 선교사들이 이를 가장 잘 구현한 사례라고 평가할 수 있을 것이다. 도마리아와 유화례는 독신 여선교사들의 이런 성취를 대표하는 사례들이다.
Abstract
This study is to sketch and analyse the lives and works of two single female Southern Presbyterian missionaries, Mary L. Dodson (1881- 1972) and Florence E. Root (1893-1995), who contributed to the growth of the Protestant churches in Honam, Korea and the improvement of status of Korean women. Recently some popularly written introduction to Southern Presbyterian women missionaries, especially those of single female missionaries have been made in Korea. The cases of Dodson and Root, who lived and worked as itinerant evangelists and educators centered in Gwangju (Kwangju), are also being popularized among Korean Christian readers. However, academic and critical approaches to these two female Southern Presbyterian missionaries are still scarce. The researcher analyse the two missionaries’ lives and ministries in parallel by consulting the primary documentary sources including official minutes and reports of the Southern Presbyterian Korea Mission and their personal letters, diaries, and memoirs and the secondary materials such as monographs and reported articles on them. Dodson spent thirty-eight years and Root fifty-one years in Korea as missionaries. In spite of their identities as foreigners and missionaries from a highly developed western country, Dodson and Root attempted to live as if they were average rural Korean women in order to identify themselves with Koreans. If the identification with the natives or the indigenization to suit a local culture is one of the criteria on which missionaries are genuine and faithful, unmarried female missionaries as a group in the Southern Presbyterian Korea Mission can be one of the best examples of the ideal realization. Mary L. Dodson and Florence E. Root were typical of them.
