초록

이 논문은 남장로회 연례회의록과 선교편지 등의 일차사료를 중심으로 군산과 전주에서 인돈(William A. Linton)의 교육선교 활동(1912-1940)을 살펴보며, 일제강점기 남장로회 교육선교가 갖는 교회사적 의미와 기독교적 유산을 규명하는 연구이다. 특히 남장로회 교육선교가 식민교육체제 아래서 대응한 순응과 저항, 협력과 갈등의 변증법을 조명하면서, 선교초기부터 일관된 남장로회 교육선교의 목적과 정책방향이 일제의 교육제도의 외적인 상황의 변화에 따라 대응한 방식과 의미에 연구의 초점을 맞추었다. 인돈은 기독교적 교육이 남장로회가 한국에서 감당해야 할 최고의 봉사라고 여겼고, 교육선교는 최고의 복음전도라고 믿었다. 불리한 여건 속에서도 학교시설과 교육수준을 높여서 일제의 공립학교에 뒤지지 않는 경쟁력을 갖추어 한국교회의 지도자를 양성하는 사명을 다하고자 하였지만, 일제가 신사참배를 강요하며 기독교 정체성을 훼손할 때 폐교를 단행하면서 식민교육이념에 타협하지 않았다. 일제 교육제도 아래서 교육선교의 목적을 이루기 위한 인돈과 남장로회의 노력은 오늘날 공교육제도 안에서 종교의 자유라는 요구 앞에서 기독교적 정체성을 고민하는 기독교대학에게 기독교적 교육의 본연의 목적을 지키면서 시대적 요구에 부응해야 한다는 교훈을 준다.

Abstract

This research focuses on William A. Linton’s educational missions at Gunsan and Jeonju from 1912 to 1940, displaying the historical meaning and Christian legacy of the educational work of the Southern Presbyterian mission in Korea under Japanese colonialism. The particular attention is paid on the ways in which the Southern Presbyterian mission had been maintaining the consistent purpose of their educational work and responded to the changes of the Japanese colonial educational policy: dialectical relations with the Japanese showing conformity and resistance as well as having cooperation and conflict. Linton regarded Christian education as the best duty of the Protestant missions to Korea and considered the educational mission the best way to evangelism. For this regard, he endeavored to improve school equipment and educational level to make the mission school competitive with Japanese government schools. However, he took an uncompromising stand against the Shinto-shrine worship enforced to the mission school by the Japanese government and carried out the closing of all the Southern Presbyterian mission schools. The efforts of the Southern Presbyterian mission to keep the purpose of educational mission under the Japanese colonial educational system will set the pattern for the Christian university, whose Christian identity challenged by the public educational system calling for religious freedom. They teach a way of response for maintaining a proper mission of the Christian education as well as meeting the demands of the times.
