본 논문의 목적은 루터와 칼빈의 주석에 나타난 창세기 17장의 영원한 언약에 대한 그들의 신학을 비교하여 공통점과 차이점을 밝히는 것이다. 두 종교개혁자 모두 아브라함 언약을 그 언약의 표징인 할례로부터 구분하며 또한 언약의 표징과 표지 즉 성례로서 구약의 할례가 신약의 세례로 대체된 것으로 생각한다. 그러나 창세기 17장의 할례언약이 루터에게는 결코 영원한 언약이 아니지만, 칼빈에게는 영원한 언약이다. 루터에게는 할례언약이 아브라함의 믿음 위에 세워진 하나님의 약속인 반면에, 칼빈에게는 아브라함과 그의 후손을 통해 장차 나타날 하나님의 교회를 위한 약속이다. 칼빈에 따르면 비록 할례가 세례로 대체되었음에도 불구하고 할례의 영원한 언약은 세례를 통해 그대로 유지된다.
Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to compare the theological viewpoints of Luther and Calvin on the eternal covenant in their Commentaries on Genesis 17 and then to identify their theological similarities and differences. Two Reformers distinguish the Abrahamic covenant from circumcision, the sign of the covenant. They consider circumcision to have been replaced by baptism and that both circumcision and baptism are the Sacrament, the sign and testimony of the eternal covenant. The covenant of circumcision in Genesis 17 is an eternal covenant for Calvin, but not for Luther. Luther sees circumcision as a testimony to God’s promises built on Abraham’s faith, while Calvin sees it as a testimony to an eternal promise for God’s church built on Abraham and his descendants. According to Calvin, although circumcision as external use has been replaced by baptism, the eternal covenant of circumcision remains intact through baptism.
