이 논문은 마르틴 루터의 교회론적 구원론을 성례 신학을 중심으로 고찰하며, “교회 밖에는 구원이 없다”는 구원론-교회론 융합의 전통 가톨릭 교리의 의미와 그 신학적 배경을 분석한다. 루터는 이 교리를 일정 부분 수용하면서도 구원과 교회의 관계를 새롭게 정의하였다. 그는 구원이 오직 믿음을 통해 이루어지며, 성례는 믿음을 강화하고 하나님의 은혜를 전달하는 중요한 매개로 작용한다고 주장하였다. 본 연구는 루터의 1차 문헌과 현대 신학자들의 2차 문헌을 검토하고, 참조하는 문헌학적 방법을 사용하여 그의 신학을 분석한다. 이를 통해 루터의 성례 이해가 구원론과 어떻게 긴밀히 통합되었는지, 또한 그의 교회론이 구원의 실현을 위한 제도적 토대로 어떤 기능을 수행했는지를 탐구한다. 더 나아가 루터가 제시한 성례 신학이 단지 16세기 종교개혁기의 산물에 머무르지 않고, 오늘날 교회의 신앙 공동체와 예배 실천 속에서도 여전히 의미를 지니고 있음을 밝힌다. 따라서 본 논문은 “교회 밖에는 구원이 없다”는 교리가 종교개혁기의 신학적·사회적 맥락 속에서 어떻게 재해석되어 개신교 신앙 전통 안에 정착했는지를 규명하는 동시에, 루터의 성례 신학이 현대 교회 신학과 실천에 던지는 함의를 재조명한다.
Abstract
This study examines Martin Luther’s Ecclesial-Soteriology, focusing on the theology of the sacraments and analyzing the meaning and theological background of the traditional Catholic doctrine of quia salus extra ecclesiam non est-the fusion of soteriology and ecclesiology. While Luther partially received this doctrine, he redefined the relationship between salvation and the church. He argued that salvation is accomplished by faith alone, while the sacraments function as vital means of strengthening faith and mediating God’s grace. Methodologically, this research employs a textual analysis of Luther’s primary writings alongside the critical engagement of modern secondary scholarship. Through this approach, it explores how Luther’s understanding of the sacraments is integrally connected to his doctrine of salvation and how his ecclesiology functions as an institutional framework for the realization of salvation. Furthermore, it demonstrates that Luther’s sacramental theology is not confined to the historical context of the sixteenth-century Reformation but continues to bear significance for contemporary Christian communities and liturgical practice. Accordingly, this study clarifies how the doctrine of quia salus extra ecclesiam non est was reinterpreted within the theological and social milieu of the Reformation, became embedded in Protestant tradition, and how Luther’s sacramental theology offers enduring implications for modern church theology and practice.
