Abstract

This article examines the conflict between Horace Grant Underwood (1859-1916) and Samuel Austin Moffett (1864-1939) over the establishment of a higher educational institution based on the Christian spirit. The article elaborates on the tension between the two missionaries by examining related contexts and documents such as reports and letters, and suggests that it stemmed from differences in the theology of mission, Christian education, and culture, and Christian approaches to social responsibility. The final decision about their conflict was made by the Joint Committee in New York, which was composed of outstanding ecumenical Christian leaders. They understood the global Christian landscape and approved the founding of Chosen Christian College in Seoul. The endeavours of Underwood and his ecumenical partners led to the formation of a relationship between the progressive Korean church and socially-oriented theology. The conflict between Moffett's and Underwood's theological approaches and legacies continues to impact later developments of theology and create a schism in the Presbyterian church.
