1910년대 기독교계 고등교육의 특성 -숭실과 연희전문을 중심으로-

본 논문에서는 1910년대 기독교계 고등교육의 성격 및 교육전략에 관해, 연희전문학교와 숭실대학(전문학교로 인가받기 전 명칭)을 중심으로 살펴보고자 하였다. 특히 당시 조선인 기독교계지식인들은 선교사업의 일환으로 설립되는 고등교육기관에 대해 어떤 인식과 전략을 가지고 있었는가를 검토하였다. 1910년대에 들어서 기독교 선교사업에서 고등교육의 문제가 새로운 대학의 설립을 둘러싸고 본격적으로 대두되었을때, 당시 선교사들과 조선인 기독교계 지식인들의 고등교육관, 즉 고등교육을 통해 길러내고자 하는 엘리트 상이 무엇인가, 기독교계 고등교육기관에 비기독교인 학생의 입학을 허가할 것인가, 그리고 고등교육기관으로서 college를 세울 것인가, university를 세울 것인가와 관련한 고등교육 목표 및 모델, 운영 정책의 방향성 문제을 살펴보았다. 지식인 양성은 1910년대 식민지 조선의 긴박한 요구이며 과제였고, 북장로교와 감리교의 교육 전략의 차이는 기독교계 조선지식인들에게 예민하게 수용되었다고 볼 수 있다. 이미 문명정도에서 ‘교육이 이미 많이 보급된 나라에는 장로교 정책이 가합하나 조선인민의 수준에는 감리교의 정책이 부합한다’고 인식하였다. 지도자와 지식인 양성을 절실히 요구하였던 식민지 조선의 시대적 상황은 기독교계 지식인들로 하여금 세속적 교육 지향 및 사회 참여적 성격, 청년교육에 힘써온 감리교와 보다 더 전략적, 심정적으로 결속하게 만들었다고 할 수 있다. 감리교의 교육전략이 반드시 민족주의적 성격을 더 띠고 있다고는 말할 수 없으며 감리교 역시 장로교와 마찬가지로 최선의 목표는 복음 선교이고 비정치화와 정교분리 원칙을 지키려고 하며 식민지권력과 일정 부분 타협해 나갔다. 그러나 개정사립학교규칙이나 대학 설립 및 운영 문제, 신사참배와 같은 교육적 중대 안건이나 위기상황에서 선교목적만을 위해 조선인의 교육기회를 폐쇄하지 않고, 열어두었다는 점은 분명한 사실일 것이다. 위의 논쟁에서 드러나는 성격은 이후 연희전문의 설립및 운영과정에서 북장로교 소장파이며 서울지역 선교사였던 언더우드의 선택에도 영향을 미치고, 나아가 고등 교육의 성격 및 방향에도 영향을 끼친 바 있다. 일제말기 신사참배를 둘러싼 연희전문과 숭실대학의 대처방안의 차이는 이미 1910년대 논쟁에 깊숙이 연루되어 있었던 것이다.
Abstract
In this study, I have studied the chracteristics and it's strategies of the christian colleges, Yunhee and Soongsil college in 1910s. The major materials of this paper are the KMF, Keedoksinbo, the diary of Yoonchiho, Annual Report of the Board of Foreign Missions of the Methodist Episcopal Church; Korea Mission and etc. The results of this study are as follows: First, In 1910s the education of the christian(mission) schools had come to the crisis according to the schrinkage in christian mission and activated competition with the government and public school. Second, the issues on higher education related christian mission's activities had been activated on 1910s. The dean of Soongsil college, W.M.Baird, the principal of Paechai academy, H.Heung. Wo Cynn and the concerned peoples were engaged in the debate on the issues that the education of christian college aimed to what type of elites; the problem related to the admission of students who are not the christian ; and what type of institution of higher education must be established, university or college. Third, the dean of Soongsil college, W.M.Baird who were representative of North presbyterian had thought that the christian higher college aimed to educate the teachers who could work for christian mission in church, and were positively against the admission of students who are not the christian and also thought the college must be established for christian mission. Forth, H.Heung. Wo Cynn thought the university must be established, in which there could be educate the broad field elites for christian mission, and also not reasonable for the admission restriction of students who are not the christian. Fifth, the chracteristics of the debate on the issues that the education of christian college had influenced on the choices of Underwood related to Yunhee college, and the following situation of higher education. The differnce in policy on worshipping the shrine between the Yunhee and Soongsil college were connected to the debates on 1910s.
