초록

조선신학교와 장로회신학교의 갈등은 대한예수교장로회와 한국기독교장로회 분열의 단초가 되었다. 이것은 한국의 신학교육 방식의 차이에서 비롯되었고, 그것을 넘어 교권 투쟁, 지역갈등, 감정적 상처가 얽혀서 일어난 사건이었다. 해방 이후 조선신학교가 주도하는 남한의 신학교육 방식에 대해 다수파의 장로교인들과 북한에서 월남한 기독교인들, 그리고 미국의 남북장로교회 선교사들은 반대했다. 그들은 과거 평양신학교의 보수적 전통을 남한에서 지속해 가기 위해서 박형룡 박사가 주도하는 장로회신학교 운동을 지지했다. 조선신학교와 장로회신학교를 합동하려는 운동이 실패한 후 1950년 4월 총회의 다수세력은 “총회신학교”를 설립하고 조선신학교를 배제하는 작업을 하였다. 총회신학교의 신학교육은 교회를 재건하고 부흥시키는 데 기여했으나, 복고적이었고 선교사 의존적이었으며 교권 투쟁에 이용되었다. 1949년까지 조선신학교와 장로회신학교 사이의 세력 균형이 있었다. 그러나 6.25전쟁 이후 조선신학교를 지지하는 총대들이 총회에 참석하기 어려운 상황에서 다수파는 “비상사태”를 선포하고 이북 10개 노회의 78명의 총대를 인정함으로 김재준과 조선신학교를 배제하는 지원을 받았다. 조선신학교와 장로회신학교의 갈등과 배제의 역사는 향후에 일어나는 모든 교권 싸움과 교단 분열의 나쁜 선례를 남겼다. 학문과 양심의 자유가 허용되지 않았고, 교권을 위해서 비법과 불법이 사용되었다. 그리고 교권 투쟁을 신앙적 투쟁으로 합리화하는 일이 일어났다. 이 연구는 앞으로 이러한 나쁜 선례들이 반복되지 않도록, 교권과 인간의 약점을 밝히려고 노렸다. 교권의 힘으로 행해진 불법은 반드시 재평가 되고 수정되어야 미래에 바른 길이 열리기 때문이다. 또한 신학의 세계성, 자율성, 건설적 기능을 모색했던 김재준의 고민은 여전히 유효하다고 강조했다.

Abstract

The conflict between Chosun Theological Seminary(CTS) and Presbyterian Theological Seminary(PTS) became the beginning of the division between the Presbyterian Church of Korea and the Presbyterian Church in the Republic of Korea. This was due to the different understandings in the method of theological education in Korea, and power struggles, regional conflicts, and emotional wounds were intricately intertwined. Majority Presbyterians, Christians who escaped from North Korea, and the Northern and Southern Presbyterian Missionaries opposed the leadership of CTS and Rev. Prof. Kim Jae-jun. They supported the PTS led by Rev. Dr. Park Hyung-ryong to sustain the conservative tradition of Pyongyang Theological Seminary in South Korea. After unsuccessful efforts to jointly combine CTS and PTS, the majority of the General Assembly in April 1950 established “General Assembly Seminary(GAS)” and worked to exclude CTS. The Theological education of GAS contributed to rebuilding and revitalizing the church, but it was retrospective, missionary-dependent, and used in power struggles. Until 1949, there was a balance of power between CTS and PTS. However, after the Korean War, when it was difficult for the many commissioners supporting CTS to attend the General Assembly, the majority declared a “state of emergency” and accepted 78 new commissioners from 10 presbyteries in North Korea, receiving support to exclude Kim Jae-jun and CTS. The history of conflict and exclusion between CTS and PTS left a negative precedent for all future power struggles and church divisions. Academic freedom and freedom of conscience were not permitted because of the name of Orthodoxy, and lawlessness was used to seize power in the church. And the power struggle was rationalized under the guise of a doctrinal struggle. This study aimed to uncover the human weakness and the injustice of church power hidden in this conflict so that such bad precedents would not be repeated in the future.
