Abstract
This paper examines the importance of liberal arts in the university setting and the role of Christian liberal arts through an analysis of C.S. Lewis's essay “Our English Syllabus.” Lewis sought to reinterpret the traditional ideal of liberal arts within the context of modern education. Amid rapid industrialization, increasing emphasis on vocational training, and growing dependence on technology, Lewis advocated for liberal education as a means of cultivating language, critical thinking, and ethical maturity. This study explores the critical alternatives Lewis proposed to the British higher education system of his time and, in doing so, reconsiders the contemporary significance of liberal arts as well as the relationship between Christian and general liberal education.
