본 논문의 목적은 현대 교육에서 간과되고 있는 자유교육에서의 종교의 역할을 기독교의 교부 아우구스티누스의 자유교육론을 바탕으로 고찰하는 것이다. 아우구스티누스는 초기에 자유교육에 대하여 긍정적인 견해를 표하다가 후기에 회의적인 견해로 선회하는데, 이러한 모습과 그 근거는 『질서론』과 『참된 종교』의 분석을 통하여 구체적으로 알 수 있다. 『질서론』에서 아우구스티누스는 3학 4과로 대표되는 이성적 탐구를 통하여 세계의 질서, 즉 신적 진리에 다다를 수 있다고 생각하지만, 『참된 종교』에서 이러한 입장을 철회하고 이성적 지식이 지니는 한계를 다음과 같이 주장한다. 첫째, 지식의 근거 측면에서, 이성적 지식은 사물이 무엇인지 알려줄 수 있어도 사물이 왜 그러한 방식으로 성립하는지 알려주지 못한다. 둘째, 지식의 목적 측면에서, 이성적 지식은 사물의 특징을 알려줄 수는 있어도 사물이 지향하는 최종 목적을 설명해주지 못한다. 셋째, 지식의 내용과 방법의 측면에서, 이성적 지식은 바깥 사물을 대상으로 하는 외향적 지식으로서 우리의 내면을 고찰하지 못하고 지식과 나의 존재를 유리시킨다. 이성적 지식의 위와 같은 한계에 대하여 아우구스티누스가 종교의 역할을 강조한다는 점에서, 본 연구는 자유교육과 종교의 관계에 대한 두 가지 해석의 가능성을 열어놓는다. 하나는 적극적･대체적 해석으로, 종교가 자유교육의 한계를 해결하면서 자유교육을 온전히 대체할 수 있다는 입장이다. 다른 하나는 소극적･보완적 해석으로, 종교는 자유교육의 한계를 조명하여 학습자가 지식을 진지하게 성찰하고 이를 내면과 연결하게 하도록 환기하는 역할을 할 수 있다는 입장이다.
Abstract
This study examines the role of religion in liberal education, which is overlooked nowadays, from Augustine’s perspective on liberal education. His initial positive view of liberal education later turned to skeptical. We investigate On Order and On True Religion to understand and appreciate the reasons for this change in view. In On Order, Augustine argues that the whole order of the world, that is, the divine truth, can be found through rational knowledge of trivium and quadrivium in liberal arts. In On True Religion, however, he retracts this view and suggests the three limitations of rational knowledge as follows. First, the basis of knowledge: Although rational knowledge can tell what things are, it cannot tell why things exist that way. Second, the purpose of knowledge: While rational knowledge can highlight the utility of things, it cannot explain their ultimate purpose. Third, the content and method of knowledge: rational knowledge, by its nature, is directed toward external things, which cannot examine the inner self in the mind and separate our being from knowledge. Against the limitations of rational knowledge, as explained above, this study opens two possibilities to interpret the relationship between liberal education and religion. One is an alternative interpretation, which holds that religion can completely replace liberal education. The other is a complementary interpretation, namely, that religion can illuminate the weaknesses of liberal education and evoke a student to re-examine knowledge, connecting it with his/her inner world.
