초록
The relation between meaning (content) and form (expression) of words (signs) in fusional languages (including Russian) has been one of controversial issues in morphological description and theory. The isomorphic relation has been assumed among traditional structuralist morphologists, but its validity is questioned on the basis of various types of empirical data, which suggest non-isomorphic relations. The current paper deals with the phenomenon of allomorphy, which has been considered an embarrassing case from the perspective of structuralist morphology, since the formal variety that allomorphs exhibit is believed to be semantically redundant, thus violating the one-to-one relationship. It is suggested and argued here that allomorphy is in fact functional; its marked allomorph indexes some characteristics of its contiguous element. This view provides a working hypothesis on reason for the historical change of allomorphy, that a marked allomorph would get eliminated if it lacks some indexical function.
