Abstract

This paper discusses morphological and distributional interfaces among several realizational modes of morphosyntactic features. The descriptive framework that this research adopts is "realizational morphology", but differentiated from the latter in making a distinction between affixal and non-affixal morphology. Affixal morphology (at least in Russian) plays a primary role in expressing morphosyntactic features, while non-affixal mor phology takes limited applicational domains and conditions, supplanting the former's role. This distinction is justified in terms of their signification modes: the former is essentially global and universal, while the latter is local and particular. Desinential allomorphy in Russian substantival morphology is described in terms of declensional affixal patterns, associated with lexical classes, called declension class. In the singular declension, three affixal patterns can be established, while in the plural declension, no affixal pattern can possibly be posited. The three patterns are associated with three declension classes, which can be characterized in terms of lexical form and gender. With respect to accentual patterns, their distribution tends to be motivated by declension class in such a way that both IA and III are accentually opposed to II. Finally, stem alternation due to fill vowels is also distributionally motivated by declension class: IA and III is opposed to II in their distribution and condition. In conclusion, factors determining distributions of affixal patterns as the symbolic mode of signification regulate those determining distributions of non-affixal patterns as the indexical mode of signification.
