황석영 소설 『바리데기』에 나타난 탈근대적 인식과 형식적 특성

이 글은 디아스포라의 삶을 그린 소설 『바리데기』가 어떻게 ‘탈근대적’ 문제의식을 드러내고 있는지를 살펴보고, 리얼리즘 소설 기법과 구술서사양식을 결합한 새로운 형식 실험이 얻어낸 성과와 한계는 무엇인지를 밝히고자 한 것이다. 황석영은 우리 사회의 민족모순과 민중의 삶을 다룬 대표적 리얼리즘 작가다. 그러나 2000년대 이후 발표한 장편소설에서는 주제의식이나 형식면에서 많은 변화가 있었다. 이 소설은 국경을 넘나드는 바리의 유랑서사를 통해서 비참한 세계 현실을 생생하게 증언하고 있으며, 이러한 모순을 해결하기 위해서는 새로운 패러다임, 즉 탈근대적 인식에 기반한 새로운 방식으로 접근해야 한다는 점을 분명히 하고 있다. 또한 복잡하게 분할된 세계를 총체적으로 재인식할 수 있는 방편으로 구술 서사 양식을 차용하는 이 새로운 형식적 시도는 그 자체로서 이미 문제적이며, 위기에 놓인 현대 소설의 대안이 될 가능성을 보여주었다는 점에서 그 의미가 크다.
Abstract
The purpose of this article are to observe how novel 『Barideggi』 describing a diaspora life express the critical mind of post-modernism and to reveal what the fruit and limits of new literary form attempts to combine the realism novel technique and the oral epic are. Hwang Sok-yong is the representative artist of the realism to deal with the lives of our society's ethnic contradictions and people. However, since the early 2000 's, his novels was changed in the subject and the form so much. The novel 『Barideggi』testified lively the miserable world's reality through Bari's vagrant epic crossing over the border. And in order to solve the contradictions, I think that he insist to need the new paradigm, namely a new approach based on the recognition of post-modernism, This new form attempts to borrow oral epic as a means to recognize again the complicated and partitioned world overall is new impulse to the literary. In addition, I set a high value on his attempts which showed the possibility of an alternativ of the modern novel to fall into crisis.
