이 연구의 목적은 응답어 ‘그래’의 화용적 특징에 대해 살펴보고, ‘그래’에 후행하는 발화와의 관계에서 나타나는 특징에 대해 확인하는 것이다. 응답어 ‘그래’의 화용적 양상을 내림 억양과 올림 억양에 따라 살펴본 결과, 내림 억양의 ‘그래’는 동의, 수용, 반응발화, 대답의 기능을 나타내고, 올림 억양의 ‘그래’는 확인 요청, 부분 수용의 기능으로 활용되었다. 또한, ‘그래’에 대한 후행 발화의 양상을 정보의 변화 유형에 따라 정보 변화 없이 선행 발화를 후행 발화로 이어가며 유지하는 유형, 이전 정보에 다른 정보를 추가하거나 정보가 발전되는 정보 확대 유형, 선행 발화 정보를 받아들이지 않는 정보 부인 유형, 선행 발화와 화제가 완전히 달라지는 정보 전환 유형으로 나눌 수 있다. 이 연구에서는 ‘그래’가 대화 상호작용의 과정에서 이루어지는 응답어로 나타났을 때의 화용적 양상을 구체적으로 분석하고, 응답어 ‘그래’가 중심이 되어 연결되는 대화 패턴에 대해서 유형화하고자 하였다.
Abstract
This study aims to understand the pragmatic characteristics of the response word ‘geu-lae’ and to analyse its use in relation to utterances following it. The analysis of rising and falling intonations in uttering ‘geu-lae’ shows that ‘geu-lae’ in falling intonation signals agreement, acceptance, answer, and a reactive token while ‘geu-lae’ in rising intonation functions as a request for clarification and an indicator of partial acceptance. As the function of ‘geu-lae’ is determined by its relationship with the preceding utterances, its function also varies depending on how the next speaker perceives and interprets the preceding utterances. The features of the follow-up utterances in response to ‘geu-lae’ are also analysed into four types in terms of information change. They include the connective type which links a preceding utterance to a following utterance without information change, the information expansion type which adds to or develops the previously-uttered information, the information denial type which accepts partial information from the preceding utterance or offers counter information, and the information switch type which introduces a new topic completely different from the preceding utterance.
