Abstract

This study investigates how the Korean disjunctive connective endings ‘-keona’ and ‘-deunji’ are realized in actual language use, and whether the semantic distinctions discussed in previous studies are reflected in authentic discourse contexts. Drawing on prior theoretical discussions, the study sets four research questions and conducts a corpus-based analysis using the New Yonsei Corpus 4. The analysis reveals that -keona frequently functions to express [choice], placing informational focus on the alternatives, and tends to represent a [closed choice] meaning. It also shows a strong preference in written discourse, formal contexts, and genres that require accurate and objective information delivery. In contrast, -deunji is more often used to convey [indifference], with informational focus placed not on the alternatives but rather on the predicate of the preceding or following clause. This form typically indicates an [open choice] or [non-commitment], and is preferred when the speaker/writer wishes to show a neutral stance toward the alternatives or leave the choice open-ended. By analyzing the formal realizations, discourse types, and contextual patterns of these endings in actual language data, this study clarifies the functional differences between ‘-keona’ and ‘-deunji’. The findings can serve as foundational material for Korean language education and Korean language teaching.
