Abstract
Against the backdrop of contemporary concerns over excessive educational zeal in Korean society, this study turns back to the early stage of modernization in the 1970s to examine the educational customs of the period and draw relevant implications. To this end, it analyzes the depictions of educational customs in three novels by Park Wan-seo—The Puppet’s Dream, Children of Paradise, and Year’s End—and proposes ways to utilize them in critical reading education. The analysis shows that The Puppet’s Dream reveals a loss of learner autonomy in college entrance exam education and a will to restore that autonomy; Children of Paradise portrays educational scenes embedded in the materialism and achievement-oriented lifestyle prevalent among the middle class; and Year’s End depicts the anxiety and desire of the affluent middle class, manifested in unwholesome practices such as school donations and teacher bribes. Based on these findings, the study suggests three steps for critical reading education using these ‘educational customs novels’: (1) identifying issues for critique in the novel; (2) connecting these issues to the learner’s own reality and reflecting on them; and (3) articulating the learner’s own view of the ‘essence of education.’ Each step proceeds through responding to questions designed for critical reading. This study not only highlights the significance of Park Wan-seo’s novels on educational themes but also offers concrete methods for reading instruction that address the subject of education—a matter of great relevance in the lives of secondary school learners—from a critical perspective.
