이 글은 『토지』 1부에서 ‘알 수 없는’ 상태로만 표현되는 몸을 ‘몸’ 담론으로 분석하고, 그것이 『토지』에서 어떤 의미를 가지는지 밝히는 데에 목적이 있다. 『토지』 1부에는 등장인물이 인지하지 못하는 몸의 변화가 있고, 스스로 통제할 수 없는 충동으로 채워지는 몸의 현장이 등장한다. 다시 말해 ‘알 수 없는’ 몸이라 표현할 수밖에 없는, 특정한 감정·정서를 부여하기 어려운 몸의 현장이 있다는 것이다. 『토지』의 ‘알 수 없는’ 상태의 몸에 언어를 부여하는 과정에 중요한 실마리를 제공한 것은 ‘신체화된 마음(embodied mind)’이라는 단어로 대표되는 제2세대 인지과학 흐름이다. 이 글에서 참조하는 구체적인 관점은 안토니오 다마지오의 성과로 그는 대사 작용, 기본 반사, 면역계 등 생명 활동을 유지하고 생존을 촉진하는 항상성 체계에 주목한다. 그리고 항상성 조절 체계에 정서를 포함시킨다. 그에 따르면 정서를 포함한 몸의 조절 체계로부터 시작된 느낌은 마음과 자아를 형성하는 메커니즘으로 이어진다. 이 글에서는 다마지오의 신체화된 마음이라는 관점을 참조하여 『토지』에 등장하는 몸과 마음을 분석했다. 특히 등장인물이 스스로 몸의 변화에 대해 ‘알 수 없는’ 상태라고 표현한 경우에 한정하여 1부의 ‘치수’와 ‘수동’을 조명했다. 도무지 ‘알 수 없는’ 마음 가운데 긴장하고 길항하는 치수의 몸과 주종 관계로부터 형성되는 종(從)의 정체성에 균열이 난 수동의 몸의 향방은 다마지오가 ‘항상성’이라 부르는 건강 또는 안녕이라 부르는 존재적 풍요로움의 상태에 대한 노력이라는 관점에서 해석될 여지가 있다. 『토지』 속 ‘알 수 없는’ 몸들을 ‘알 수 있는’ 몸으로 해석하는 작업의 목표는 『토지』 독해를 확장하고 새로운 관점을 부여하기 위함이며, 작가가 남겨둔 섬세한 묘사와 통찰에 비로소 이해의 언어를 부여하기 위함이다. 마지막으로 문학 텍스트 분석에 과학적 관점을 더하여 몸을 통찰하는 일은 텍스트의 안과 밖 모두에서 유효한 이야기일 수 있다. 몸을 주목하는 일은 성격이나 감정처럼 한 인물의 특성으로 국한되지 않는 인간의 문제를 논하는 일이 될 것이다. 이 글은 『토지』의 생명력을 이어나가기 위한 또 하나의 시도로서, 그간의 연구 성과들에서 포착되지 않았던 것을 조망하고 『토지』를 독해하기 위한 또 하나의 매개로써 ‘몸’을 제안한다.
Abstract
This text aims to analyze the body that is expressed only as ‘unknown’ in the novel Toji Part 1 and to clarify its meaning in the novel in terms of the discourse on the body. In Part 1 of Toji there are scenes where the body undergoes changes that the characters are not aware of and where the body is filled with uncontrollable impulses. In other words, there are scenes where the body is difficult to assign specific emotions or feelings and can only be described as an ‘unknown’ body. The second-generation cognitive science trend, represented by the term “embodied mind,” provides important clues to the process of assigning language to the ‘unknown’ body in Toji In this text, a specific perspective referred to by Antonio Damasio's achievements is examined, and he pays attention to the homeostatic system that maintains life activities such as metabolism, basic reflexes, and the immune system, including emotions in the regulatory system. According to this, feelings that originate from the body's regulatory system, including emotions, lead to mechanisms that shape the self. In this text, the perspective of Damasio’s embodied mind is used to analyze the body and mind that appear in Toji In particular, the dimensions and passivity of Part 1 were highlighted in cases where the characters themselves described their bodily changes as ‘unknown.’ The direction of the passive body with cracks in the identity of the follower formed by the relationship between the tense and the passive body, which cannot be understood in the ‘unknown’ mind, can be interpreted from the perspective of efforts for the state of existential richness called health or peace, which Damasio calls “homeostasis.” The goal of interpreting the ‘unknown’ bodies in Toji as ‘known’ bodies is to expand the interpretation of Toji and provide new perspectives, and to give language to the subtle descriptions and insights that the author has left behind. Finally, incorporating a scientific perspective into the analysis of literary texts to gain insight into the body can be a valid story both inside and outside the text. Focusing on the body can be a human issue that is not limited to the characteristics of a single individual, such as personality or emotion. This text proposes the body as another medium for understanding Toji and as another attempt to continue the vitality of Toji.
