Abstract
This study examines Hong Nan-pa’s translation of Tears of Love(1922), focusing on his engagement with world literature and its cultural significance in colonial Joseon. In the early 1920s, Hong Nan-pa contributed to the spread of modern sensibilities and reflections on human existence among Joseon youth by translating major works of world literature into Korean. In particular, Tears of Love—a rendition of Alfred de Musset’s Confession of a Child of the Century based on the Japanese intermediary translation From Love to Love(戀より戀へ)—is notable for its adaptation to the emotional needs of contemporary youth, despite its transmission through multiple layers of translation. In Tears of Love, the original work’s themes of historical pathology and social disillusionment are partially attenuated, while narratives centered on romantic sentiment and personal anguish are foregrounded. This transformation was not a mere loss of meaning but rather a deliberate adjustment to the sensibility of a generation yearning for personal freedom and emotional liberation under colonial oppression. Hong Nan-pa strategically reoriented the universal concerns of world literature within the specific historical and emotional context of colonial Joseon. His translation practice thus transcended simple linguistic transmission, serving as a cultural intervention that fostered new imaginative possibilities and forms of spiritual resistance. Ultimately, this study analyzes the source text, translation process, and shifts in meaning in Tears of Love, elucidating how French Romantic literature was refracted and transformed within the colonial Joseon literary field. Furthermore, it highlights Hong Nan-pa’s translation activities as a significant cultural practice that reflected the emotional demands and historical aspirations of Joseon society in the early 1920s, thereby reevaluating his place within the broader trajectory of modern Korean translation history.
