Abstract
In the early twentieth century when the modern learning was introduced into Korea, the heritage of classic literature in Chinese was arranged by the traditional scholars of Chinese classics. The representative works were Chosonsimun byeoncheon by Cheong Man-jo in 1927, Chosonmunhak'wolnyu ryakjeon by Hong Hee, Dong'yang sihak'wolnyu by Yi Seung-kyu, and Choson ko'keumsiwha by Kim Won-keun. The study on Chinese classic by the scholar who experienced modern learning was Choson hanmunhak'sa written by Kim Tae-jun in 1931. At that time, Japanese scholars were deeply interested in Chinese classics as an universal culture, which could connect with China, Manchuria, and Korea in the realm of East Asia. Choson, the general magazine published by the Japanese Government-General of Korea and Ch'eong'gu hak'ch'ong published by the Academic Society of Ch'eong'gu in 1930 contained the research papers and bibliographical notes on Choson Chinese classics by Japanese scholars. Especially, 多田正知 was a leading scholar who produced the papers on Chinese classics in Koryo Period, Chinese poetry in the early Choson, and archaic writings in the middle Choson. In comparison with it, the academic approaches on the cultural heritage of Choson in colonial period were the counteraction against the imperialistic and nationalistic studies by the Japanese scholars. As a result, such works were not paid attention to as Korean modern learning, by focusing on Choson peculiarity with a Chinese flavor. In this situation, Kim Tae-jun seemed to complete Choson hanmunhak'sa. The leading scholars, such as Kim Tae-jun and Japanese scholars were followed by the scholars who majored in Korean language and literature in Kyeongseong je'kuk University. However, the stream of the studies on Chinese classics was discontinued after the liberation from Japan and became inactive until 1970s.
