Abstract
Korean and Japanese literature written in Chinese characters, which have shared the cultural sphere of East Asia where Chinese characters are used, have supported the ideas of Korean and Japanese literature, respectively. The concept of independent national literature, which was formed along with modernization, was developed within the framework of national and ethnic literature. This study examined the position of literature written in Chinese characters, which was an ancient cultural power, in the process of modernization of Korea and Japan and establishment of the history of their independent national literature. The present study also looked at general perceptions of that time about literature written in Chinese characters, focusing on Yaichi Haga of Japan, who first wrote the history of literature written in Chinese characters, and Kim Tae-jun of Korea. Korean and Japanese literature written in Chinese characters had different kinds of writers and cultural climates, so they had different literary forms or contents, and ideas of Confucianism. With modernization of Japan, Japanese literature written in Chinese characters was separated and excluded from the history of Japanese literature. In this situation, “History of Japanese Literature Written in Chinese Characters” by Yaichi Haga was aimed at reflecting on the rejection of Japanese literature written in Chinese characters and re-establishing the importance of this literature. In contrast, “History of Korean Literature Written in Chinese Characters” by Kim Tae-jun brought to the surface the negative opinions about this literature, leaving a fault in the study of Korean literature, but it contained a nationalistic idea that placed the highest priority on the national spirit during Japanese colonial rule of Korea. These different perceptions shown by Yaichi Haga and Kim Tae-jun about literature written in Chinese characters can be said to be one aspect of the formation of a nation-state reflecting academic nationalism called national literature.
