도덕성에 대한 뇌신경과학적 접근의 도덕교육적 함의

초록

오늘날 도덕, 도덕성, 가치 등은 윤리학, 철학의 전유물이 아닌 신경과학, 신경윤리학, 신경철학 등의 주된 주제로 다루어지고 있다. 그리하여 인간 행동과 의식, 본성, 심적 작용에 대한 통섭적 연구들에 대한 깊은 숙고 없이 도덕교육은 가능하지 않은 듯 보인다. 그러나 현재의 뇌신경과학은 인간의 심적 작용과 행동에 대한 원인과 결과를 온전하게 설명해 낼 수 있을 정도로 발전한 것이 아니다. 감각질의 존재, 두뇌 현상에 대한 일인칭적 시점과 삼인칭적 시점의 차이, 현상과 설명 사이의 간극의 존재 등은 아직까지 신경과학과 심리철학의 논의에서 완전한 합일점을 찾지 못한 과제로 남아있다. 뇌 영상 촬영을 통해 우리가 알 수 있는 것은 오직 그러한 뇌의 작용이 존재하고 있다는 ‘사실’이다. 최신의 신경과학적 논의에 대한 맹신, 확대 재생산, 혹은 거부와 비난보다는 이것이 인문학적 사고의 주제들에 주는 진정한 함의를 보다 냉철하게 숙고해야 한다. 신경과학은 지난 세기 동안 상당한 경험 연구의 성과물들을 내놓았다. 인간의 심적 작용과 도덕성의 근원에 대한 보다 분석적인 해명이 제안되었다. 처칠랜드는 인간의 도덕적 행동을 가능하게 하는 도덕성의 인자로서 옥시토신을 제시한다. 뇌과학의 최근 논의를 통해 우리는 다음과 같은 사실들을 알 수 있다. 첫째, 도덕 판단의 상황에 따라 두뇌의 작동영역이 다르다. 둘째, 도덕적 자율성 강화는 도덕적 동기를 강화하게 한다. 셋째, 감정적인 상황을 의식적으로 직시하는 노력은 전두엽을 활성화시킨다. 이를 토대로 다음과 같은 도덕교육에의 시사점을 제시할 수 있다. 1. 학생들의 도덕적 정서 자극과 두뇌 발달 고려 : (1) 이론식 수업의 보완 - 프로그램 중심의 체험 활동 수업, (2) 도덕적 두뇌 형성을 위한 반복적 연습의 필요성 인지, 2. 도덕적 내적 동기의 강화 : (1) 학생들의 전두엽 발달에 대한 관심, (2) 학생들의 내적 동기의 발현 유도, 3. 지필 위주의 평가 지양과 정신적 가학의 위해성 인식: (1) 맥락을 고려한 다각적인 측면에서의 평가 방안 모색, (2) 정신적 학대의 폭력성에 대한 인식 제고와 유대감 형성을 위한 노력 그리고 도덕성에 있어서의 남녀성차에 대한 고려이다. 기존의 합리성과 같은 이성의 작용에 전적으로 의존했던 도덕적 판단은 뇌신경과학적 차원에서 새롭게 이해되어 도덕교육 현장에 재구성되어 적용되어야 한다. 도덕교육에 대한 철학적 논의에 더하여 과학적, 합리적 근거 지움이 무엇보다 요구되는 시점이다.

Abstract

The recent study of neuroscience suggests the followings: (1) Feelings, intuition, and the subconscious do important work in moral judgment. The acts of orbitofrontal cortex, which makes feeling connected with decision-making processes, play a major role in human choice. The reason presents a variety of alternatives, and the feeling helps us get a choice of them. (2) The source of feeling is (the acts of) dopamine. It exerts significant influence to moral capacity. The important point of it is that it requires some training. (3) Feeling and reason have both pros and cons in making a decision. The right decision demands different recognition strategies on the situation. Training or practice is also important for right recognition strategy. Moral education can borrow usefully from accumulated and related knowledge on brain development and function of neuroscientific research: first, the active areas of brain are different in each situation; second, strengthening moral autonomy reinforces moral motivation; third, the brain’s frontal lobe is activated by the efforts of facing the emotional situation consciously. Based on these, the implication for moral education can be suggested as below: 1. the consideration for students' emotional stimulation and brain development, 2. the reinforcing moral intrinsic motivation, 3. the sublating evaluation mainly with written exams and the recognition for the injury of psychological maltreatment. Existing moral judgement has depended entirely on reason's activity. But the moral judgement should be understood on a neuroscientific basis; it should be restructured and applied to moral education in school by standing on the basis of awareness of the importance of emotion and intuition.
