도덕 생득론자의 관점에서 본 현행 초등도덕교육의 문제점

초등학생들이 학교에서 배우기 전에 이미 도덕 교과에서 배우는 내용을 알고 있는 것처럼 보이는 이유는 무엇일까? 이에 대한 답은 단순히 지적인 의문을 해소하는 것을 넘어 현행 초등 도덕 교과 과정의 적절성을 가늠하는 문제와도 관련된다. 만약 초등학교 도덕 수업이 학생들이 이미 알고 있는 내용을 반복하고 있는 것이 사실이라면 우리는 현행 초등 도덕 교과 과정의 적절성을 재고해 봐야 할 것이다. 이 글에서 필자는 도덕 생득론자들(moral nativists)의 이론을 통해 사람들이 굳이 학교에서 배우지 않아도 일부 도덕 반응의 타당성을 파악할 수 있는 이유를 정리, 소개하고 있다. 이들이 공통적으로 주장하는 바는 굳이 도덕에 대해 배우지 않는다고 하더라도, 우리가 도덕 반응 내지 판단을 내릴 수 있는 능력을 갖추고 있으며, 이러한 능력을 이용하여 범문화적인 성격의 도덕 판단을 내리게 된다는 것이다. 필자는 이와 같은 입장에서 판단해 보았을 때, 현행 초등 도덕 교과 과정은 검토, 보완해야 할 여지가 있다고 주장하고 있다.
Abstract
Why does it seem that elementary school students already know what they are learning in moral subjects before they learn at school? The answer is directly related to the question of measuring the appropriateness of the current elementary moral curriculum. If it is true that elementary school moral classes are repeating what students already know, then it may be necessary to examine the appropriateness of the current elementary moral curriculum. In this article, I find out why Moral Nativists' theory allows people to understand the validity of some moral responses without necessarily learning them at school. What Moral Nativists say in common is that even if we don't learn about morality, we have the ability to make moral responses or judgements, which leads to beyond cultural moral judgments. Using these findings, I ask that the current elementary moral curriculum be reconsidered.
