Abstract
From the view of meditation education, the Neo-Confucian theory of Weifa meditation—which explores the state of the mind before thoughts and emotions arise—deserves closer attention. This study first examines the nature of the ideal Weifa mind(未發心) as envisioned by Zhu Xi(朱熹). Synthesizing its various features, the ideal Weifa mind may be characterized as a subtly awakened state in which automatic and unconscious sensory activity remains alive, while simultaneously perceiving the arising of a pellucid and warm vital energy. Building upon this understanding, the paper explores the moral educational application of Weifa meditation. First, moral education can guide students to understand the state and value of the Weifa mind. Second, it can help students cultivate and regulate their minds through the practice of various Weifa meditation methods, such as quiet-sitting meditation with breath control and Xiao-xue(小學) meditation. Third, educational systems should provide students with time for rest and recovery, allowing the mind to return naturally to the tranquil state of Weifa.
