Abstract

Despite its long-standing reputation, Kantian ethics has been criticized for failing to provide an adequate moral compass for human life. A central objection is that it fails to properly elucidate the nature and value of the goods inherent in personal relationships, and therefore can‘t realize them. Kantian ethicists have responded with various defenses, but the sufficiency of these rebuttals remains an open question. This paper will first examine two key criticisms leveled against the Kantian framework regarding personal relationships. It will then present a prominent Kantian response, specifically through Barbara Herman's revised account of Kantian ethics. Finally, the paper will assess the validity of Herman's explanations. While Herman's revision offers significant merit in addressing the criticisms, this analysis will ultimately reveal that the universality and impartiality fundamentally pursued by Kantian ethics are incompatible with the unique and partial goods intrinsic to deep personal relationships.
