Abstract
In Northeast Asia, recently, there have been active discussions on the formation of region-wide or bilateral free trade agreements(FTAs). This study aims to provide a quantitative overview of the Induced Production Mechanism between Korea, China and Japan, three major economies in Northeast Asia, where globalization is currently under way. The empirical analysis suggested the following points:Japanese industries in general have highly self-sufficient structures, so that they tend to induce relatively less production abroad. Japan imports intensively from China low-value-added products such as fiber, textiles and garments. In contrast, the products Japan imports from Korea are becoming higher value-added, as seen in the recent increase in IT-related products. This reflects the fact that the industrial linkage between Korea and Japan is more deeply interdependent and highly competitive, compared with the Korea-China or the China-Japan linkage. On the other hand, Korea's industries more or less rely heavily on foreign economies, notably China and Japan, to induce production. Finally, the industrial linkage in the electronics industry between Korea, China and Japan was found to be significantly tight, which implies that the three countries' interdependence in the industry has been deepening, and that China is rapidly upgrading its industrial structure and catching up with Korea and Japan.
