Abstract

Getting lost in a book is a ubiquitous phenomenon widely appreciated by many readers. However, it has been one of the least favored topics discussed in cognitive neuroscience research. A recent increase in conduct of the brain studies with reading suggests the possibility of finding a mechanism of therapeutic reading by revealing how reading affects the brain. This paper aims to find the key conditions and a specific methodology of bibliotherapy that can bring meaningful behavioral change on the basis of brain science. For this purpose, brain science articles related to reading and bibliotherapy were reviewed and the characteristics of neuronal processes during reading and therapeutic reading were analyzed. This study also discusses what reading is, how brain science views the relationship between mind and body, and what happens to the mind when reading. As a result, three neuronal factors were found in the therapeutic reading process: mirror neuronal systems, reactivation, and disrupting reconsolidation. The findings indicate that the movements of body and brain are linked in reading behavior and that a significant clinical bibliotherapy effect can be expected when the therapy process is based on the mechanism of reading. The importance of this study lies in its exploration of the extent to which reading has brought meaningful changes in the lives of readers, and in suggesting a concrete methodology of bibliotherapy.
