Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate a possible influence of Korean traditional folktales on the development of children’s self-conception by analyzing selected main characters’ self-conception in Korean folktales. The subjects of this study were selected from the best-selling folktale picture books for 3 to 6-year-old children in Korea which has been considered to have a positive influence on the development of children’s self-conception in terms of themes and storylines. The chosen books have been concurrently sold by more than three Korea-based online bookstores (Yes24, Interpark, Kyobo, Libro, and Aladin, among others). Content analysis, especially based on sentences, was used to analyze the selected texts. Main characters’ expressions on their own thoughts, feelings, understandings and self-evaluations were included along with the descriptions and explanations of the main characters made by third-parties or omniscient narrators. The results of the analysis were as follows: first, self-conception in the analyzed Korean folktales appeared to be more positive than negative, but the difference was negligible. Second, out of the five main types of self-conception, Korean folktales contained emotional, general and physical ego more than social and cognitive ego. Third, this study also discusses the results of analyzing the eight categories of story structure where “series of incident,” “general statement,” and “elaboration, and cause and effect” consistently appeared in the folk tales in that order but “comparison-contrasting” and “question-answer” appeared rarely. Fourth, the analysis result of the story structure types based on the five types of self-conceptions indicated that each type of self-conception existed in equal amounts. Therefore, this study is meaningful in that it demonstrates the ways in which Korean folktales affect the development of children's self-conception and, by extension, suggests a better standard for selecting books for children, as well as a proper direction for future publications.
