Abstract

This study aims to identify implications for literature education and literary therapy of a brain-scientific understanding of the ways in which stories are constructed and function in the human brain. To this end, we examined ① what the brain uses as materials and what stories it creates; ② what kinds of structures of stories the brain creates; ③ the purpose of creating stories in the brain; and ④ what stories do to the brain. A summary of the discussion is as follows. ① The main material of the story the brain creates is memory. Memories are not as precise and objective as moving pictures, but are influenced by emotions and interests and have the characteristics of snapshots taken in conformity with self-image and worldview. These memories can be reconstructed and transformed over time as perspectives and experiences change. ② The structure of the story that the brain creates and enjoys is called a plot. This plot is internalized in spiritual forms and externalized as substantive narratives. In particular, our brains are fascinated by plots in which a protagonist with a flawed theory of control gains new and powerful control theory while being attacked by various types of events. ③ The purpose of the brain's creation and enjoyment of stories is to understand what other people are thinking so as to increase control over the world, maintain self-identity, and preserve self-identity to better cope with the world. ④ The power with which stories act on the brain can be summarized in two ways: indirect experience and empathy. Literary works enable indirect experiences through image simulation and induce empathy for fictional characters. In short, brain science deepens our understanding of the human beings who create and enjoy stories. Further, literature is useful in developing the brain to maintain, improve, and strengthen control over humans and the world. In particular, literature presents the lazy brain with different and unfamiliar contexts for life and different human experiences. By doing so, it helps to construct new identities and lives. Literature is therefore a meaningful companion for a good life.
