Abstract

The purpose of this study is to read “Baek-Yi Yeoljeon” written by Sama-cheon, a historian of the Han Dynasty, in the frame of bibliotherapy and find ways to overcome resentment through this process. Most discussions on “Baek-Yi Yeoljeon” have focused on the moderation of intellectuals. This study deviates from these discussions by focusing on the mind of Baek-Yi, the main character of “Baek-Yi Yeoljeon”. Baek-Yi (and Suk-Je) gave up his right to the throne and travelled far to meet the new world. However, he was frustrated when he witnessed the violent takeover of the government. He hid in Seosan and starved to death. Based on these events, Sama-cheon concluded that Baek-Yi was “resentful”. However, Confucius disagreed on this point and concluded that Baek-Yi was not resentful. This study explored what might exist between the differing interpretations of Sama-cheon and Confucius over the “heart of Baek-Yi”. In the process of closely researching the context of “Baek-Yi Yeoljeon”, I have attempted to formulate a new interpretation of “eun (隱)” and “myung (命)”. “eun (隱)” can be seen as a heart that aches for the world, and “myung (命)” as a heavenly mandate, interpreting Baek-Yi’s secluded life as a social fate beyond personal frustration. In addition, I concluded that while Sama-cheon merely stated a fact as he understood it, Confucius attempted to free Baek-Yi from the frame of resentment through a different interpretation. This process of re-reading classics allows for a reading of this classic text that goes beyond resentment. Reading classics for therapy might be possible by focusing on the emotional narrative of a text while applying the traditional reading of it. The new reading of classics might originate in the cracks of or divergence from the traditional readings, which is expected to provide a classical basis for modern people’s emotional understanding and control.
