Abstract

This study empirically analyzes the age-specific determinants of population migration among cities and guns in Gyeongsangnam-do, South Korea. The analysis is separately conducted for the total population, the twenties, and the elderly using panel data from 2020 to 2014 year. The results of the analysis revealed a structural characteristic that several variables influenced both moving-in and moving-out in the same direction. For the total and elderly populations, non-tax revenue per capita had positive influence on both moving-in and moving-out, which implies that the region with higher non-tax revenue is a one with higher mobility where both moving-in and moving-out are active. On the other hand, the degree of regional development and the rate of home ownership had negative influence on both moving-in and moving-out, which indicates that the region with higher level of regional development and home ownership can be considered as the one with higher sedentariness that has stable settlement conditions. In the case of twenties, moving-in was positively affected by local tax burden, non-tax revenue, number of businesses, and entrance number of universities, while it was negatively affected by degree of urbanization. However, no significantly influencing variable was found for moving-out of the age group, which implies that their moving-out is likely driven by non-linear and individualized factors. The results implies that moving-in and moving-out need to be connected each other in the analysis of the population migration, although antecedent researches have separately treated them. And in solving population-related problems, we need to design tailored policies for each age group considering that determinants are different according to each of the group: lifetime-based and flexible measures for young adults, and settlement base-enhancing measures for the elderly.
