정의가 개입된 곳은 명명백백한 논의의 맥락이 형성되며, 이에 따라서 자연스럽게 정의 자체도 논란의 여지가 없다는 것이 통념이다. 이런 까닭에 이에 대해 어떤 방식으로든 문제를 제기하는 일은 무모해 보인다. 하지만 정의의 본성에 관한 문제를 비롯하여 적절한 정의의 분류에 대한 문제 등의 기본적인 사항에 대해서도 논란이 존재한다. 여기서는 가장 빈번히 인용되고 교육되는 주요 논리학 서적의 정의 분류와 논자가 중요한 의의가 있다고 믿는 몇 가지 분류에 대해서 검토하고자 한다. 이를 통해 정의와 관련된 문제, 특히 정의의 분류 문제가 통념과 달리 뚜렷하고 명확하여 논란의 여지가 없는 주제만은 아니라는 점을 드러내고자 한다. 이를 위해, 분류에 관한 일반 이론의 견지에서 기존의 전통적 분류가 갖고 있는 문제를 지적하고자 한다. 또한 정의 분류는 정의이론과 밀접한 관련을 갖고 있기에 규정주의 정의이론의 입장에서 기존 분류를 평가하고자 하며, 그에 따라서 만족스러운 정의 분류가 되기 위해서 개선되어야 할 점이 어떤 것인지 살피고자 한다. 여기서 논자는 기존의 정의 분류가 문제의 소지를 안고 있다는 소극적 내용을 주로 논의하였다. 하지만, 이런 논의를 통해서 제거되고 남은 부분에 주목한다면, 전통적 정의 분류의 개선책이 자연스럽게 드러날 것으로 기대한다.
Abstract
It seems to be no room for arguing about definition because we think definition is one of the major tools which make argumentative contexts clear, so definition itself is free from any controversy. But this assumption is too naive for us to go with. From the point of view of general theory of classification and definition, I examine several classifications of definition in some popular textbooks and important articles. W. Salmon's position about the theory and classification of definition is corrected and supplemented by speech act theory, and then defended.
