Abstract
Although the term “truth” is a key term in philosophy, the ancient and modern discussions related to it, as well as the continental and analytic philosophy, seem to be heterogeneous in appearance. Through comparison between Aristotle's theory of truth and the modern identity theory of truth, I will argue that the concept of truth in traditional philosophy and the concept of analytic truth and the discussions about it lie on a continuum. Aristotle's definition of truth has three characteristics: first, truth applies not only to propositions but also to constituent elements of propositions; second, epistemic and ontological elements are mixed in the definition; and third, truth bearers and truthmakers are not distinguished. From the modern point of view, this characteristic might seem to indicate the incompleteness of Aristotle's definition of truth. However, I will describe these three characteristics as appearing similarly in the modern identity theory, and examine their theoretical background. Therefore, it is most appropriate to understand Aristotle's definition as an identity theory. Based on this, I will present the conclusion that the traditional concept of truth and the modern concept of analytic truth are not as far apart as they seem.
