Abstract

This study deals with Lee Donhwa's New Human Philosophy, in connection with the cultural movement of Cheondogyo which as a leading religion played an axial part in nationalist movement of Korea during the Japanese Colonial Period. Lee Donhwa's cultural movement can be hardly analyzed by the dichotomy between nationalism and socialism as well as between resistance and cooperation. He agonized over his position, facing two different ways between the interior demand of systematization of the Cheondogyo doctrine and the demand of practical ideas for the then cultural movement. Here, he should compete with socialists for theoretical hegemony. In this process, he has established the cultural movement theory of Cheondogyo and wrote New Human Philosophy by actively accepting Western philosophy and interpreted Cheondogyo Ideas into 'evolutionistic life philosophy.' Instead of accepting Western philosophy without screening, he established his own independent philosophy based on Donghak Thought while subjectively receiving and applying the Western Philosophy to his theory. At the beginning, he did his theoretical research by referring to popular Japanese thinkers such as Kuwaki's culturalism, Inoue's phenomenology or ontology, Kuroiwa's last religion theory. However, at the stage of the formation of his New Human Philosophy, he referred Western philosophers to his work. Among them, his evolutionistic life philosophy was influenced by Bergson and his idea of 'Hanul' and the god was influenced by both Spinoza and Feuerbach. His theory of 'a new human' was influenced by Nietzsche's 'activism moral' and overman (Der bermensch)’, 'impulsion theory of creation' by Bertrand Russell, human-centered philosophy of Feuerbach, 'creative evolution' of Bergson, and 'the social revolution' of Karl Marx. The following features can be suggested from the process of Lee Donhwa's acceptance of Western philosophy. Firstly, the immanent philosophy is applied rather than dualistic philosophy which stresses transcendence. Secondly, his philosophy accommodates pantheistic realism of becoming and changes as well as evolutionistic generative philosophy. Thirdly, his philosophy is thoroughly human-centered and based on 'the principle of common people.' Fourthly, his philosopy pursues social changes through spiritual transformation and formation of a moral main stream while critically accepting Marxism. Basically, the formation of his philosophy stems from the background of Donghak thought which provides rich philosophical ideas of life and actions such as 'sicheonju(serving god within me)‘ ’jiki(universal energy)‘, ’icheonsikcheon(heaven eat heaven)‘, ’gaebyeok(civilized transformation)‘. Finally, it is significant that he pursued the third way of cultural struggle for a spiritual communism by transcending the structure between nationalism and socialism as well as the structure of nationalistic and class contradictions, but at the same time his third way negatively contributed to the power of concrete actions, facing the colonial reality.
