Abstract

This paper illuminates Seneca’s view of emotion theory in relation to grief(aegritude) from the perspective of a moral psychology. By analyzing to Marcia on Consolation, I aim to achieve two objects. The one is to investigate Seneca’s understanding of grief and the meaning of human moral progress. Especially I explore how Seneca’s persuasive method for combating grief could make the moral progress between the fool and the wise possible. To do this work, I pay attention to Seneca’s use of exempla and the Stoic view of the death. The other aim is to illuminate that Seneca’s consolatory method on grief is not considered as eclectic one but the Stoic goal of apatheia. For this examination, I inquire a Stoic concern about human beings’ common circumstances and the knowledge of the logos of universe or the nature’s providence and their post mortem existence.
