노년은 인생의 비극인가? 흔히들 노년에는 활동을 할 수 없고, 몸이 쇠약하며, 쾌락을 앗아가며 죽음에 대한 불안감에 시달린다는 등의 불평을 한다. 이런 불평들에 대해 키케로는 다음과 같이 반박한다. 노년에도 정치 활동과 정신 활동을 할 수 있고 농사일도 할 수 있다. 체력 저하는 절제 있는 생활로 늦출 수 있으며 정신활동을 늘림으로써 체력에서 잃은 것을 보상받을 수 있다. 감각적 쾌락에 대한 욕구 감퇴는 오히려 노년의 큰 축복이다. 그래야만 정신이 제대로 계발되며 쾌락이 기준이 아니라 정신적 판단이 기준이 될 수 있다. 죽음에 대한 공포는 노인뿐 아니라 모든 시기에 다 느낄 수 있다. 노인은 젊은이가 바라는 것, 즉 장수를 누렸다는 점에서 젊은이보다 행복하다고 할 수 있다. 본 논문에서는 특별히 키케로의 『노년에 관하여』의 작품을 중심으로 흔히 사람들이 말하는 노년의 문제점들이 ‘나이듦’으로 인한 것인지 아니면 ‘덕의 부재’ 때문인지 살펴볼 것이다. 또한 노년에 쾌락이나 신체적 능력은 저하되더라도 덕을 통한 마음의 평정과 지적 행복을 유지하면서 인생의 최상의 단계가 될 수 있는 가능성이 있는지 논의해볼 것이다. 마지막으로 키케로가 어떤 의도로 노년의 행복을 말하고 있는지, 이런 키케로의 주장이 고대 그리스 로마시대뿐 아니라 오늘날 한국의 노인 문제를 해결하기 위해 어떤 조언을 해 줄 수 있는지도 함께 검토해 볼 것이다.
Abstract
Is old age a tragedy in life? ‘Restriction of activities,’ ‘weakness,’ and ‘loss of pleasure,’ ‘the fear of the death,’ etc., the main reasons why the old age he suggested looked miserable are the results from physical factors. In response to these complaints, Cicero refutes: In old age, political and mental activities can be carried out and agricultural activities can be also. Aging negatively affects the body, but we can lessen aging’s impact through exercise, moderation in food and drink, and by caring for our intellect. Decreasing the desire for sensory pleasure is a great blessing in old age. Only then can the mind be developed properly and pleasure be not the standard, but the mental judgment. In the old age, people can enjoy the pleasures of spiritual activities and farming. Fear of death can be felt at all times, not just for the elderly. Old people are happier than young people so far as they have enjoyed what they want, that is, longevity. This study attempted to discuss view on the problems at old age - whether the cause of these problems is "age" or "lack of virtues." - through On Old Age (Cato maior de senectute) written by Marcus Tullius Cicero (106~43 B.C.). In addition, we will consider whether there is a possibility that even if pleasure or physical ability decreases in old age, it can be the best step in life while maintaining peace of mind and intellectual happiness through virtue. Lastly, we will also examine how Cicero is talking about old-age happiness and what advice these Cicero's arguments can give to solve the problems at old age in Korea today as well as in Greco-Roman Antiquity.
