이 논문의 주된 목적은 체험주의적 시각을 통해 도덕적 담론에서 ‘몸으로서의 개인’ 개념의 필요성과 가능성을 제안하려는 것이다. 도덕적 권리와 의무를 지는 도덕적 행위자의 폭을 규정하는 것은 윤리학적 논의의 출발점을 이루는 선결적 작업이다. 근세에 이르러 서양의 지성사에서 개인의 발견은 불가역적인 정신사적 성취의 하나이지만 그 역사와 귀결은 간단하지 않다. 서구 지성사에서 개인 개념을 확립한 것은 근세철학이지만, 그러한 근세적 개인 개념은 ‘이성’이라는 불안정한 이론적 개념에 의존하고 있다는 점에서 여전히 배타적 억압의 위험성을 안고 있다. 필자는 경험적 사실에 근거한 ‘몸의 개인’이 이러한 위험성을 비켜서는 대안이 될 수 있다고 제안하려고 한다. 몸의 존재로서의 인간을 특징짓는 핵심적 요소로 ‘경험의 유폐성’을 들 수 있다. 즉 우리는 각자의 경험에 갇힌 존재이며, 그 경험은 타자와 직접적으로 공유되지 않는다. 그것은 몸의 경계를 보여 주며, 개별자의 경계를 보여 준다. 이러한 유폐적 개인 개념은 이론적 요청의 산물이 아니라 경험적 지식의 문제라는 점에서 불안정한 사변적 개인 개념이 안고 있는 억압의 위험성을 근원적으로 비켜설 수 있다. 필자는 이러한 몸의 개인 개념이 도덕적 논의에서 정신주의가 제시하는 ‘마음의 개인’을 통해 제기하는 도덕적 문제에 훨씬 더 성공적으로 대처할 수 있다고 제안한다.
Abstract
The main purpose of this paper is to offer the necessity and possibility of the “person-as-body” in place of “person-as-mind.” To define a moral agent who bears moral rights and duties is the starting ground for any moral discourse. Although the invention of “person” in modern age no doubt marked a remarkable turn in Western history, the consequences are not always favorable. As the modern conception of person was grounded in the unstable notion of “reason,” it bears the danger of oppression against the non-rational being. I suggest that “person-as-body” may replace “person-as-mind,” while getting rid of the immanent danger of the latter, insofar as the former is open to empirical knowledge. The clearest evidence that supports the notion of “person-as-body” is seen through the irreducible fact of the incarceratedness of experience, that we are incarcerated in our own experience. I suggest that this may well serve the clearest mark for the individuality of persons. That is, the incarceratedness of the experience marks the boundary of a person, and of an individual, which is required in any moral discourses. I suggest that “person-as-body” may work far better in dealing with moral questions raised within the “person-as-mind” conception.
