Abstract

9th-century Muslim philosophers and theologians went through a philosophical debate about the concept of six-day creation. The key point was the debate over whether to interpret the six-day creation of God in a literal sense or in a different sense. Things keep changing. However, if the creation for 6 days is completed, then whenever things change after that, God's creative act must be continued. However, Nazzam abandons this interpretation of traditional Muslim theology and tries to explain the process of change with Aristotle's concept of potentiality-actuality. He asserts that God created all things that were to be changed at once during the six days God created them. God implanted nature in the creatures as He created them. But it is hidden and is revealed when things change. This is Nazzam's hiding-revealing theory. In this thesis, we are going to study how Nazzam's theory came to be accepted in Muslim theology and philosophy by examining major literatures. Before Nazzam was dealing with this subject, the Eclecticism of the Eternalists developed a philosophical activity. They tried to translate Aristotle's concept of change into everyday language. The resulting concept is the theory of hiding and revealing. Nazzam actively accepts these theories and uses them to criticize the creation theory of orthodox Muslim theology.
