적극적/소극적 튜터 간 온라인 학습자 지원 유형과 교육적 효과성 비교

A Comparison of Tutoring Patterns and Educational Effectiveness between Active and Passive Tutors in Online Learner Support

초록

본 연구의 목적은 원격교육환경에서 온라인 튜터링 활동을 적극적으로 실시하는 튜터와 소극적인 튜터의 학습자 지원 유형을 비교할 뿐만 아니라, 이들이 담당하고 있는 학습자의 학업지속과 학업성취도 차이를 분석하는 것이다. 또한 이와 같은 결과를 토대로 학습자에게 교육적 효과를 줄 수 있는 체계적이고 효과적인 튜터링 전략을 경험적으로 도출하고, 이것에 대해서 논의하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 원격대학에서 학생수가 비교적 많고 튜터 간 게시글 수의 차이가 큰 세 학과를 선정한 후, 게시글 수가 많은 튜터와 적은 튜터를 각 1명씩 선정하여 총 6명의 튜터가 담당하는 튜터링 사이트의 게시글 내용을 분석하였다. 튜터들이 탑재한 총 6,443개의 메시지를 인지적, 정의적, 기술적 영역과 월별로 구분하여 분석하였다. 또한 적극적 튜터와 소극적 튜터가 담당한 총 1,091명 학습자의 중도탈락여부, 학습자들이 수강한 튜터 및 비튜터 담당 교과목의 중간고사와 기말고사 성적을 분석하였다. 본 연구의 결과, 튜터의 적극성 정도에 따라 월별 및 영역별로 서로 다른 학습자 지원 유형을 보였으며, 튜터의 적극성 정도와 학습자의 학업지속과 중간고사 성적이 유의미한 관계가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 이 결과를 통해 본 연구에서는 몇 가지 유의미한 시사점을 도출하였다. 첫째, 학습과정의 전후를 포함하는 전체 기간과 학습자 지원 영역에 대해 균등한 튜터링을 제공하는 것이 필요하다. 둘째, 인지적 영역에서는 학습자의 학습 요구와 시기를 고려해야 한다. 셋째, 정의적 영역이 특히 중요하며 개별적이고 지속적인 지원이 필요하다. 넷째, 기술적 영역의 지원은 학기 초와 학기 말에 비중 있게 제공되어야 한다. 본 연구는 시기와 영역을 고려한 구체적인 학습자 지원 전략을 제시함으로써, 원격교육 관련 교수자, 튜터, 개발자, 행정담당자 등이 효과적인 학습자 지원을 계획하는 데에 활용될 주요한 정보로 기여할 수 있을 것이다.

Abstract

The purposes of this study are not only to compare the patterns of online learner support provided by the active and the passive tutors, but also to analyse their learners' retention and learning achievement. Additionally, based on the findings from the comparison and the analyses, effective and empirical tutoring strategies are to be proposed to influence the educational effectiveness for learners. Three active tutors and three passive tutors in a distance university participated in this study and their 6,443 online messages, were analyzed in terms of the monthly period and the three (cognitive, affective, and technical/functional) aspects of learner support. Their 1,091 students' drop-out record and midterm and final grades of tutored /non-tutored courses were also analyzed. This study showed that the active and the passive tutors supported learners with different patterns in the three aspects of learner support as well as a monthly period. It also showed that there was a relationship between the positiveness level of tutor's learner support and his/her students' retention and midterm grades. Based on these findings, effective tutoring strategies are suggested as follows: 1) tutoring should be provided in a balanced way during the whole learning period and based on the three aspects of learner support; 2) the cognitive aspect of learner support needs to consider learners' learning needs and appropriate timing; 3) the affective aspect of learner support should be especially emphasized and needs to be provided more individually as well as continuously; 4) the technical/functional aspect of learner support needs to be considerably provided in the beginning and at the end of course period.
