Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of peer tutoring on students' self-efficacy, performance, and satisfaction toward using computers. Effectiveness of different strategies of pairing peer tutors and tutees were further compared. The tutor-tutee pairs were based on either prior achievement levels, attitudes toward learning computers, or random assignment. Out of the 320 middle school participants, 80 students in two classes each participated in either one of the three peer-tutoring conditions or teacher-led instruction regarding educational computing for six weeks. The result of analyses of variance and post-hoc tests showed that the peer tutoring did not make a significant difference in students' self-efficacy toward using the computers. However, the students in the randomly assigned tutor-tutee condition also demonstrated better computing performance significantly than did those in the teacher-led instruction. In addition, the students in the three peer-tutoring conditions showed higher satisfactions scores significantly compared to those receiving the teacher-led instruction.
