Abstract

Owing to COVID-19, many virtual online classes were conducted at universities in 2020. Online courses comprised real-time online classes, virtual recorded lectures, and student activity-based real-time and non-real-time classes. The choice depended on various factors, including university resources, instructors’ preparation levels, students’ demands, and features of the courses. The purpose of this study was to examine pre-service teachers’ perceptions of teaching presence, learning presence, educational performance of various online classes, and their demands in the various types of online classes in the academic year 2020. The results revealed that the respondents perceived teaching presence, learning presence, and educational performance to real-time online classes the most positively. This was followed by virtual recorded lectures, resources, as well as student activity based on real-time and virtual recorded classes. The results further revealed that effectiveness and ineffectiveness factors varied based on the types of online classes. Constrained participation time was recognized as an effective factor in online real-time lessons. However, this time constraint was also recognized as an ineffective factor. The advantages of non-real-time recorded lectures included possible advanced preparation and the highest level of repetition. However, it may be ineffective for students with a lack of initiative because they tend to delay classes, resulting in poor learning quality and increasing psychological pressure. Where instructors used YouTube and other materials not produced by the processors for resources and student-activity based classes, the lack of connection in the classes required students to do excessive activities and tasks. The various implications of effective online classes have been suggested in this study.
