Abstract

Self-location ability, one of the basic abilities in way-finding using maps, and a complex of spatial abilities, attracts attention from the field of geography education since the accessibility to maps has been maximized these days. This study aims to analyze Korean middle and high school students’ self-location ability in respect of age, sex, way condition and the alignment effect. The result from an experiment with a questionnaire indicates that male students shows higher performance overall. Differences by age exist among male students, not among female students, that is, the performance of male high school students is higher than that of male middle school students. Sex differences exist only among high school students. However, sex differences among middle school students are found in the difficult way condition. It is estimated that differences in self-location ability performance are bigger in a more difficult condition. The ratio of participants affected by the alignment effect in self-location ability tends to increase as the degree of difficulty does. However, male high school students are found to be almost free from the alignment effect. The intensity of the alignment effect in self-location ability also inclines to increase as the difficulty does, while no male high school students are affected strongly by the alignment effect. This result may give a clue to practical map learning considering learners’ level.
