이 연구는 대학생의 공간인지도를 알아보는데 목적을 두었다. 이를 위해 예비교사인 공주교육대학교 학생들을 대상으로 질문 조사를 하였다.연구의 결과, 학생들의 공간인지와 실제의 지리 공간 간에는 큰 괴리를 나타내 보였다. 구체적인 연구내용과 관련한 연구의 결과는 크게 네 가지로 나뉘어 진다: 첫째, 충청북도의 형상과 범위에 대한 심상지역은 실제와는 달리 동서 방향으로 긴 타원형의 모습이었다. 이에서 지역명칭으로 인한 혼동이 두드러진다. 둘째, 주요 도시의 위치에 대해 잘 인지하지 못했는데, 이에 영향을 주는 요인은 해안선의 형태, 도시의 입지, 인접 도시의 규모, 응답자의 연고지 등이었다. 이러한 요인들은 도시 간의 거리인지에도 영향을 준다. 셋째, 행정구역의 면적이 도시의 인구규모에 비례한다는 잘못된 관념 때문에 이에 대한 극심한 오인을 보였다. 넷째, 방위에 대한 혼동도 매우 심했는데, 동일 위도나 경도에 두 도시가 놓여있지 않은 경우에 더 현저하였다. 부가적으로 공간인지의 성별 차이는 확연하지 않으나, 남성이 거리와 방위에 있어서 다소 우월한 것으로 나타났다.이러한 문제는 지리교육의 부실에서 연유한다. 즉, 학생들은 지리수업을 통하여 공간감각을 발달시키는 대신에 무의미하게 지명을 익히는 데 치중했기 때문이다. 공간인지도의 향상방안으로서 지도읽기, 가상공간 체험, 현장관찰 등을 겸비한 보다 폭넓은 학습지도를 제안한다.
Abstract
This paper purposes to make clear spatial knowledge of a student. For this purpose, I have made an inquiry of students in Gongju National University of Education.As a result, we have found out a big gap between their spatial knowledge and real one. It can be divided into four categories. First, they are confused about the shape and scope of Chungcheongbuk-do region. Second, they cannot locate main cities on the map. In this paper, I suggest that coastline, the location of the city, a big city close by, and the student?s hometown influence his spatial knowledge. These factors affect the location and distance of two points. Third, they think that a big population means a big area size. But it?s a mistake. Fourth, they cannot find a right direction. For example, it is hard to find some place not on the same latitude or longitude. In addition, men excel women in spatial knowledge, especially finding the direction and distance.These problems show that current education of geography is short of the target. In short, students learn place names meaninglessly rather than develop spatial sense. I propose that a teacher put more time in map reading, virtual experience, and field study at geography class.
