싱가포르는 중앙 집권적인 교육 시스템을 운영하고 있으며, 미래의 국가 인력 양성이라는 관점에서 학교 교육과정을 융통성 있게 접근하고 있다. 본 연구는 싱가포르 교육 정책과 지리 교육과정 분석을 통해 새로운 미래 핵심역량 중심 지리교육과정 설계를 위한 시사점을 얻는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이러한 목적 하에 본 연구는 싱가포르 교육의 체계와 개정 교육과정의 특징을 논하고, 최근 공시된 초등학교 사회과 교육과정과 중등학교 지리과 교육과정을 중심으로 각 학교급 별 특징, 목적, 내용 체계, 교수 방법 및 평가 등을 분석하였다. 싱가포르에서는 지리는 초등학교 1학년부터 ‘사회’에서 사람·장소·환경, 시간·변화·지속성, 정체성·문화·지역사회, 부족·선택과 자원이라는 주요 주제 안에서 역사, 일반사회와 함께 통합적으로 학습되어지고, 보통(인문), 특별, 속성과정으로 나누어진 중등학교에서는 독립적인 필수 교과로 다루어지고 있으며, 국가 수준 입시 시험의 주요과목 중 하나이다.
Abstract
Singapore has centralized education system managed by government, and operate school curriculums flexibly based on the purpose of national workforce development for the future. The aim of this study is to get implications for the development of new competence-based geography curriculum through analyzing Singapore’s education policy and geography curriculum. For this purpose, this study is to discuss about the characters of Singapore education system and new revised curriculum, and to analyze social studies syllabus of primary school and geography syllabus of secondary school pertaining to the objects, the system of contents, teaching methods, assessment etc. In Singapore, the geography is to be learned synthetically in social studies from grade 1 in primary school under the main subjects of ‘People, place and environments’, ‘Time, change and continuity’, ‘Identity, culture and community’, ‘Scarcity, choices and resources’with history and society, to be learned as one of required major subjects independently in secondary school of nomal(academic), special and express course, and to deal as one of major subjects in national examinations.
