초록

이 연구는 최근 강조되고 있는 능동적 시민성의 출현 배경과 의미, 그리고 지리교육을 통해 이를 촉진시키기 위한 방안에 대해 탐색하였다. 스케일의 관점에서 볼 때 시민으로서 자발적 행위와 적극적인 참여가 가장 잘 반영되는 것이 로컬리티 또는 공동체(지역사회)이며, 이러한 로컬리티에 기반한 실천적이고 활동적인 시민성을 능동적 시민성이라고 한다. 이러한 능동적 시민성은 공화주의 또는 공동체주의에 토대하여 시민의 참여와 실천을 강조하며, 이를 위해 시민인 개인 또는 학생에게 권한을 부여를 한다는 점에서 중요하다. 이러한 능동적 시민성 함양을 위한 지리교육은 정치적 문해력의 함양과 학교를 비롯한 다양한 공동체의 참여 활동을 통한 실천을 강조하는 비판교육학과 연계된 시민성교육을 통해서 실현될 수 있다. 이러한 능동적 시민성 교육의 궁극적 목적은 시민의 적극적 참여를 통한 사회 변혁을 목적으로 한다.

Abstract

This paper is to explore the origin and meanings of active citizenship, and geographical education method needed in preparation of young people for active citizenship. In terms of scale, locality or community is a scale that voluntary action and active participation as a citizen is fully reflected, and a practical and active citizenship based on locality is known as the term ‘active citizenship’. The active citizenship based on communitarianism or republicanism emphasizes participation and practice of citizen, and empowers people for this. The geography education for active citizenship can be practiced by education through political literacy and critical pedagogy, which emphasizes praxis in community including school. A final aims of education for active citizenship is a social transformation through active citizen’s participation.
