Abstract
Since 2000, educational authorities in the world have explicitly emphasized global citizenship education(GCE) as an educational alternative for a more just and equitable world. The school teacher, as an agent who implements GCE in accordance with the ideal of global social justice, are now regarded as a key figure who determines the success of GCE or not. School geography has a long history of supporting GCE at a school level. Yet little of the academic literature on geography education specifically focuses on the meanings and impact of geography teacher agency for developing global citizens. This paper addresses this gap by examining diverse literature on global citizenship, curriculum approach and teacher agency which are closely linked to just global citizenship education. In this paper, I argue that, for a more just global citizenship education, an ecological aspect of geography teacher agency should be encouraged, in particular, on the basis of practical curriculum situation. For an ecological geography teacher agency, based on the analysis of the 2015 Geography National Curriculum Revision, some suggestions in education policy, initial teacher education and teaching practices are finally discussed.
