Abstract
The ghost of multiculturalism is wandering over the South Korean society. Supported bygovernmental policies and popular and academic discourses, multicultural education is appropriated fora series of national reterrritorialization projects, which aim at overarching socio-spatial fragmentationcaused by transnationalism. Also, such dualisms as ‘majority-minority’, ‘we-they’, and ‘subject-other’, onwhich paternalistic multiculturalism is grounded, are weakening the political possibility of postmoderncriticism internalized in the notion of multiculturalism. Based on the problematic above, this paperapproaches multiculturalism from the perspective of minority social movement, and gropes for thepolitical possibility of ‘critical’ multiculturalism. First, by examining literature on minority and minority movement, this paper argues that the binarism of majority-minority is not the starting point but theresidual in analyzing social discrimination and exclusion. On the contrary, it suggests to focus on how the‘majority consciousness’ as a micro-fascism subjugates the mind of each fragmented subject, how thosesubjects performatively do their majority practices, and on what conditions the ‘minority consciousness’emerges to resist against the micro-fascism. Second, this paper pays attention to the way in which LouisWirth defines and discusses minority, and argues that minority social movement means nothing without‘minority space’ and ‘minority spatial movement’. Third, by critiquing the discursive dimension ofdiscussion on contemporary multiculturalism, this paper introduces the notion of ‘criticalmulticulturalism’, its political vision, and its concretized examples.
