다문화교육의 과제는 크게 소수자의 주체화, 둘째, 다수자들의 변화, 셋째, 공동체 형성이라고 할 수 있다. 그런데 현재 한국 다문화주의 담론이나 다문화교육의 수준은 이주민들의 한국 사회 적응을 돕는 수준이며, 주로 정책이나 제도 수준에서 논의되고 있을 뿐 일상적 수준에서 서로 다른 차이를 어떻게 관용할 것인가에 대한 논의는 빠져있다고 생각한다. 인종과 민족이 다른 이들이 한국 사회에 적응할 수 있도록 한국어를 가르치고, 한국문화를 알게 하는 것은 중요하다. 그러나 더 나아가 소수자들의 적응을 넘어 소수자들이 주체화할 수 있어야 하고, 다수자들 역시 함께 변화할 때, 어렵게 공동체를 이루어갈 수 있을 것이다. 따라서 본고에서는 오늘날 다문화주의, 다문화교육에 관한 주류 담론인 자유주의적 다문화주의의 주장과 한계를 살펴보고, 비판적 다문화주의의 도전을 살펴볼 것이다. 이것을 기초로 다문화교육에의 시사점을 논의할 것이다.
Abstract
The aims of multicultural education are mainly on the subjectivity of the minorities, the change of the majorities, and the formations of community. However discussions on multi-culturalism and level of multi-cultural educations in Korea are at best situated in helping immigrants accommodate Korean society. It is, therefore, required that the discussions on how Korean policy and system can accept the gaps in their everyday life. Teaching Korean language and culture to those who have different races and ethnicities is undoubtedly an important task. However, beyond the minorities adaptation, the community would not go until the minorities are able to be independent, and the majorities change by themselves at the same time. This paper reviews on theme and limit of the liberal multi-culturalism and the challenge of critical multi-culturalism. Based on these reviews, the implications will be examined.
