각국 지리교육에서 위치학습의 내용과 방법 분석 연구- 미국, 영국, 호주, 캐나다의 초·중학교 지리교육과정 분석을 중심으로 -

초록

위치는 지리교육의 핵심 개념으로 활용되어 왔다. 그 이유는 위치가 지리적 현상들의 시공간적 상황을 설명해주고, 지역이해 및 지역 간 관계, 공간적 프레임을 형성하는 기초지식의 역할을 하기 때문이다. 그럼에도 불구하고 우리나라 지리교육에서 위치학습은 ‘암기식 산물 지식’, ‘암기식 지명 지식’을 유발한다는 비판을 받으며 지리 학습에서는 많은 관심을 받지 못하였다. 본 연구에서는 외국의 지리교육에서 다뤄지고 있는 위치학습의 내용과 방법을 분석하여 우리나라 지리교육에서 위치학습을 위한 시사점을 도출하였다. 세부적인 시사점은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 위치개념 학습에 대한 보완의 필요성이다. 위치지식을 형성할 수 있는 위치개념 학습의 강화이다. 공간상 위치 파악하기, 공간상 위치표현하기, 위치속성 파악하기 등의 활동을 균형있게 활용하여 위치개념 학습을 강화하는 것이다. 둘째는 장소성, 지역성, 공간관계 파악, 문제의 원인 및 상황 파악 등의 지리학습과 위치지식을 연결하는 학습을 활용하여 위치지식의 적용력을 강화하는 것이다.

Abstract

Location has been used as a core concept of geography education. This is because it is a basic knowledge for explaining the spatial situation of geographical phenomena, understanding local characteristics and recognizing spatial relationships. Nevertheless, in Korean geography education, location learning has been criticized as causing ‘memorizing product knowledge’ and ‘memorizing place name knowledge’. In this study, the content and method of location learning in other advanced countries are analyzed, and implications for location learning in Korean geography education are derived. The implications are as follows. First, we need to supplement learning of the location. Students should do know the spatial location, express the spatial location, and analyze the location attributes. Second, The application of loction knowledge should be strengthened. Linking the location knowledge with locality, spatial relationship, and geographic problem cause and situation is needed.
