여행의 교육적 의미가 더욱 강조되고 있는 오늘날, 여행은 학생들 뿐만 아니라 성인학습자로서 끊임없이 사회(society)를 경험하고 초등지리교육을 실천하는 교사들에게도 큰 의미를 지닌다. 특히 본 연구는 초등교사의 여행 경험이 ‘전환학습(transformative leaning)’의 계기가 될 수 있다는 점에 주목하였다. 이에 질문지와 면담을 통해 초등교사들의 여행 경험을 심층적으로 이해함으로써, 여행에 대한 초등교사들의 인식 및 여행 경험의 초등지리수업에의 활용 양상을 탐색하고 초등지리교육에서 여행의 가치를 도출하였다. 또한 여행 과정 속에서 전환학습의 계기가 되었던 경험들, 즉 소수자로서의 정체성 경험, 국제정세에 대한 역동적 경험, 삶의 관점에 대한 성찰 경험 등을 살펴보고, 이것이 초등지리수업에 어떠한 영향을 주었는지 탐구하였다. 본 연구는 여행의 초등지리교육적 의의에 대해 다각적으로 탐색해 보는 기회로서 가치를 지닐 것이다.
Abstract
With ever increasing emphasis on educational meaning of travel today, travel has important meaning not only for students but also for teachers who experience society constantly as adult learners and practice elementary geography education. Especially, this study paid attention to the fact that elementary school teachers’ travel experiences can be a motive for ‘transformative leaning.’ Thus, through in-depth understanding on the elementary school teachers’ travel experiences by using the questionnaire and interviews, this study explored elementary school teachers’ perception on travel and utilization (aspects) of travel experiences in elementary geography lessons and drew out value of travel in elementary geography education. In addition, study also investigated experiences in travel process which became the motives of transformative learning, which are, for example, identity experiences as a minority, dynamic experiences on international situations and reflective experiences of view on life, and explored how they affected elementary geography classes. This study is expected to have value as an opportunity to seek out the meanings of travel in elementary geography education in diverse perspectives.
