모든 관용의 실천을 정당화하는 보편적인 관용의 근거를 상상하는 것은 어려운 일이다. 우리가 일반적으로 관용의 행위라 이해하는 행위들은 모두 다양한 동기들 로부터 실천되는 것처럼 보이기 때문이다. 현대 사회에서 관용은 종교적인 이유에 서 실천되기도 하고, 철학적인 근거로부터 이끌어지기도 하며, 정치적인 효용의 관 점에서 홍보되기도 한다. 이러한 근거들을 모두 포괄할 수 있는 관용의 근거를 모 색하는 일은 지나치게 이상적인 기획이다. 하지만, 모든 관용의 실천을 설명해주는 보편적인 근거에 대한 규명이 불가능할지도 모른다는 사실을 받아들인다고 하더라 도 우리는 여전히 다양한 근거에서 실천된 관용을 관용의 실천이라 부를 수 있게끔 하는 근거가 무엇인지를 물을 수 있다 즉. 관용의 보편적 근거가 아닌, 관용을 관용이게끔 하는 특정한 자격조건이 무엇인지를 물을 수 있다는 것이다. 본 연구에서 논자는 관용이 실천되는 과정에 대한 분석이 이러한 물음의 답을 제공한다고 주장 한다. 이를 위해 논자는 관용이 두 가지 종류의 반대를 통해 실천되며, 이 두 반대가 특정한 기제 안에서 서로 영향을 미친다는 것을 규명한다. 더 나아가 이러한 기 제를 성공적으로 작동하게 하는 특정한 종교, 철학, 정치, 문화적 근거들 만이 관용 을 가능케 하는 근거의 자격을 획득한다는 것을 주장한다.
Abstract
It is very difficult to imagine a universal basis for toleration that justifies the practice of all toleration. The acts of toleration recognized as the example of toleration are triggered and practiced by a variety of motives. We may notice some acts of toleration are practiced for religious reasons, some are justified by philosophical grounds, and some are practiced from the point of view of political utility. Finding a perspective that encompasses all the motives of toleration would be overly idealistic. However, even if we accept the fact that it may not be possible to identify a universal basis that explains all practices of toleration, it is still possible to inquire what makes the various examples of acts of toleration the genuine acts of toleration. On what ground can we entitle those varieties of acts of toleration as toleration? In this study, the author argues that the analysis of the process in which toleration is practiced provides an answer to this question. To this end, the author establishes that toleration is practiced through two kinds of objections and that these two objections influence each other within a specific mechanism. It further argues that the theoretical ground for establishing a genuine act of toleration depends on how successful the various grounds(religious, philosophical, political, etc.) are in providing the motive which makes the mechanism of toleration well.
